Leadership on the Line: Staying Alive Through the Dangers of Leading Review
Great insights from a couple Harvard profs. Get Out of Your Own Way at Work...And Help Others Do the Same: Conquer Self-Defeating Behavior on the Job Top Quality
Get Out of Your Own Way at Work...And Help Others Do the Same by Mark Goulston is a fast, digestible read on a variety of failings that might beset you or a colleague at work. Procrastination, not taking No for an answer, and staying too long in a job you should leave are just 3 of the 40 items covered in the book. Each item has an anecdote to give it 3-d clarity, helpful tips, and a quote. All in all the short chapters provide a good snapshot of what the problem is and some strategies to address it.
Goulston created a very efficient book and seems to know his stuff. While I liked the breadth of it, I wanted to go deeper on each, even if it meant leaving some out. But that's my preference. This is a good book for the reference shelf when you find yourself stuck in a work rut or managing a difficult team member. You can get some quick tips and inspiration here.

Reunion in Death (In Death #14) This instant
I'll start by saying that I am a huge fan of the In Death series and I've read them in order up to Purity In Death. Reunion In Death finally shows us just what it is that happened to Eve in her childhood. If you've been reading the series then you already know about the nightmares, and if you haven't then I would recommend going back to Naked In Death and starting from the begining. It's a great ride. I'll admit that some of the books in the series have moved me more than others, and this is the one that moved me more. Seeing Eve's reaction to being in Texas and up close and personal with a horse was hilarious!Get more detail about Reunion in Death (In Death #14).

Social Media Marketing For Dummies Immediately
"Social Media Marketing for Dummies" is the perfect antidote for any marketer who fears that "going social" is something that only consumers do. After reading this book you'll see why businesses large and small have every reason to embrace the social world, too, so long as they are willing to develop a more authentic social voice and become more responsive to consumers. In the tradition of the "For Dummies" series, Shiv Singh's book gives the marketer a gentle nudge into the social world with some practical tips on topics ranging from how to launch a social campaign to applying metrics. By the way, the "For Dummies" title is something of a misnomer. Shiv's insights are quite applicable for experts, too, an example being his chapter on building a Social Influence Marketing mobile campaign. I work closely with Shiv at Razorfish and am lucky to enjoy the benefit of his insights all the time.Get more detail about Social Media Marketing For Dummies.

Social Media 101: Tactics and Tips to Develop Your Business Online Get it now!
Being on social media and all, this non-fiction piece is written slightly tangentially (almost as if the author had just pulled together dozens of their blogs!) and probably almost works better as a reference book - i.e. look up the chapter you are interested in and just read that.
While I did enjoy the book, and found some parts to be informing, I feel like Social Media 101 is not entirely user friendly. Being computer savy but not expert, I often found myself floundering when Brogan name dropped and didn't bother explaining anything that would be obvious to a social media user already.
All in all, this is more of an `interesting pointers' book rather than a well constructed thesis on the use of social media. The book could have perhaps been stronger if it had been related to specific business ideas other than just sales pitches. Not a huge burden to read but hardly a light bulb in the dark either.

Intellectuals and Society Buy Now
A tour de force. Thomas Sowell has once again proved that he is one of the intellectual giants of our era. This book is full of sentences that make you stop and think, and "ah ha" moments that strike you like a slap up the side of the head.
This is a review of the audio version, and I found Tom Weiner's reading a bit pretentious. Some of this is very heavy material, and a lighter tone would have done a better job of keeping the listener's interest. I would recommended the print or kindle version.Get more detail about Intellectuals and Society.

Judgment in Death (In Death, No. 11) Right now
This was different than the other books in the series, but is one of my favorites. It's more intense because we get to see a different side of Roarke (an even more possessive, alpha side). We've seen how Eve handles the issue of Roarke's old flames, now we get to see how Roarke handles one of Eve's past lovers (definitely explosive, but won't post any spoilers), as well as how he handles Eve trying to protect him by keeping secrets from him (not well!).
This is a series that follows the same two characters throughout, as well as a wonderful cast of secondary characters. Because of this, newcomers shouldn't start the series with this one. Instead, go to the beginning (Naked in Death) and get carried away like the rest of us. :) If you jump in the middle, you very likely won't enjoy it and will wonder what all the hype is. It's worth starting at the beginning... trust me!Get more detail about Judgment in Death (In Death, No. 11).

Save Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind
I have worked +12 years on marketing of multi-national companies and to me this book is a masterpiece for basic to middle experienced marketing managers, as it covers the basic concepts of positioning (also called equity or consumer image) with simple but eye-opening examples, is amazing how many millionaire failures I have seen that could have been avoided following cases from this books; i.e.: wonder why Axe shampoo is not as big as its amazing deodorant products ... or why Toyoya keeps fyling in the US despite latest bumps in the road?, read all the foundations here (but not these examples). Net a must for good marketers. I only missed more recent and complex examples taking into account a more globalized and digitalized world.
As usual I will end / begin saying that any good rating must consider: 1) performance (what I expected vs. what I got) and 2) value (how much I paid vs. what I got). This book adds value at a super price, buy it!Get more detail about Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind.

Oh to go undercover with Ruth to various restaurants in New York City in the 90s wearing wigs and costumes, what a perfect delight! This book is so entertaining to read, I loved every second of shadowing her on her food adventures. I will be attempting to make her recipe for Sort-of Thai Noodles very soon. Cheapest SILENT SPRING
Silent Spring created a stir when it was first published and reading it nearly 50 years later feels, in many ways, like deja vu. The specific details may be different, but the overall picture is far too familiar. Chemical companies, government agencies, popular media, special interests, all continue to tell us that we must destroy every organism that might conceivably cause discomfort or inconvenience to our perceived "good" life. The fact remains that heavy-handed, get-them-before-they-get-us,kill-them-all-off mentality will, in the end, do just that - destroying the very life it strives, supposedly, to protect. The more things change, the more they stay the same.Get more detail about SILENT SPRING.

This is truly one of the best books I've ever read. I've been following Jack for years and read his previous book as well as books written about him by others. Although I honestly expect to read the same thing in every Jack Welch book, I find a ton of new stuff. I even find new stuff in the same book as I re-read it. I've implemented many things he preaches and I can attest that they work! One of the most important things I learned from this book is how to be a great leader and a great general manager. It turned my career around significantly and gave me many new insights. I highly recommend this book to everyone! Way to go, Jack!Get more detail about Winning.
Purchase The Essential Drucker: The Best of Sixty Years of Peter Drucker's Essential Writings on Management (Collins Business Essentials)
This is an excellent book to source the wisdom of Peter Drucker. He isn't only the father of modern business philosophy, he wrote, eloquently about politics and self-development as well. This little book condenses some of his finer points in one book. He is probably one of the most quoted business consultants and writers of the past three generations and if you haven't read his work, you have no doubt read someone else books or columns that has emulated Drucker.
Tom Peters - In Search of Excellence: Lessons from America's Best-Run Companies (Collins Business Essentials),The Little Big Things: 163 Ways to Pursue EXCELLENCE
Seth Godin - Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?, Purple Cow, New Edition: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable--Includes new bonus chapter,
Jim Collins - Good to Great and the Social Sectors: A Monograph to Accompany Good to Great,
Forbes - How Capitalism Will Save Us: Why Free People and Free Markets Are the Best Answer in Today's Economy
All of these writers, thinkers and business consultants owe a debt to Peter Drucker.
One of the best Drucker quotes from this book, "The purpose of a business is to create a customer," He was the first to identify critical principles in management, economics, politics, and the world in general.
One of the more popular principles we have read in FastCompany to Forbes is "Management by Objectives and Self-Control" ("Each manager, from the 'big boss' down to the production foreman or the chief clerk, needs clearly spelled-out objectives"
So if you're like me you like to know the history behind current trends. This book will give you perspective on where current business pontiffs source their work, where business leadership was and should be, and most important why we are in such an economic mess. Peter Drucker would have made an excellent President, Secretary of State, Commerce Secretary, or Secretary of the Interior.Get more detail about The Essential Drucker: The Best of Sixty Years of Peter Drucker's Essential Writings on Management (Collins Business Essentials).

Order You Can Be a Stock Market Genius: Uncover the Secret Hiding Places of Stock Market Profits
Some of the other reviewers are right in saying this is an old and slightly out of date book. But it is such a good book, and it is very readable. I would love for the author to write a second edition. I dislike books that don't have a lot of references, and while this author has a few, the references I was hoping to get were ones that lead to further reading to understand how he arrives at his conclusion. Continually throughout the book he tells you that he is not covering the complex stuff for simplicity, and that is fine, but I would like to go over some of those fine details or at least reading material that teaches me how to go over those fine details,
Every section would require vastly more knowledge than was given in order to apply in real life. A second edition is really needed. But in the end I was very happy to have read this book. A word to the average investor out there though, this book is meant only for full time investors...........people who spend less than an hour or two every week on their investments should not even bother with this book. This book was not meant for the career orientated, don't have time for much type of person.Get more detail about You Can Be a Stock Market Genius: Uncover the Secret Hiding Places of Stock Market Profits.

As a psychologist with a business background, I found this book extremely worth the read. It is not that often that I get a personal ah-ha from a book these days, but this one did the job. I learned several things that were personally extremely helpful and that gave me very specific ideas about how to work more effectively, understand how to work with others better, and stay out of common work traps. I found the style as well as the science approachable and useful. I'll be buying this one for family members and talking about it with friends. Well worth the read.

My Life from Scratch: A Sweet Journey of Starting Over, One Cake at a Time Review
I loved the book. It is a great, fun read.
Gesine does a wonderful job of blending the ingredients of her life, whipping them into an honest, humorous story. I could easily picture the people and places she describes. You will get a taste of her crazy, stressful Hollywood lunch meetings; behind the scenes and out the door of her Montpelier, Vermont bakery and her cherished cake and coffee at 3 p.m. with her beloved Grandma in Germany.
The book left me feeling deliciously hungry and happy - I recommend reading it with a scone or two and a real cappuccino by your side.

The Three Signs of a Miserable Job: A Fable for Managers (And Their Employees) (J-B Lencioni Series) Immediately
Patrick Lencioni continues his series of excellent leadership/management books with The Three Signs of a Miserable Job: A Fable for Managers (And Their Employees) (J-B Lencioni Series). As usual, he uses a fable to make his point. He tells the story of Brian Bailey, a retired CEO who is trying to determine why people hate their jobs and how it can be fixed. Through the fable and the more direct final section, Lencioni identifies three forces that make a job miserable: anonymity, irrelevance, and immeasurement.
When workers feel anonymous, especially to the boss, they tend not to care about their work. They just want to get through the day and go home. It is up to the manager to take a genuine interest in each person so that this anonymity is dispelled.
When people feel irrelevant to the company, they often decide that their work doesn't matter. While they may be key to the success of the organization, they may not know that. Someone needs to tell then the role they play and how their work helps others.
While immeasurement may be a word that Lencioni has created, it is a simple concept. Workers need to be able to measure success. They need to know that they have fulfilled their goal. We have to be careful to measure things that we can control, but we all need some way of knowing that we have succeeded.
Lencioni is clear that these are simple concepts, but his insights are excellent. As usual, Lencioni takes very simple things and shows that any manager can master them with some effort. This is one more really helpful tool in leading people.

Competing on Analytics: The New Science of Winning Best Quality
I was hoping the book would delve into analytics tools and techniques, but it doesn't even get close. It pretty much explains 2 things: first, that analytics are important and second, that there are 5 stages a company must go through (from no analytical capability to corporate-wide capability). The book mentions some companies that use analytics, but again, not the specific tools.

As so often happens, I came to find this book in a roundabout way and I'm delighted I haven't missed seeing it. It's entertaining, informative, occasionally heart-wrenching, at times laugh-out-loud funny. I love the way the author translates dog language into English so we know what this extraordinary creature is doing and thinking. Loyalty in Death (In Death, No. 9) Right now
I have been listening the the series in order, and have been enjoying the books very much. The narrator does a very good job voicing the various people, especially the main characters. Love the way she makes Roarke say, "Darlin' Eve"!
This has been the most exciting story line so far. The build-up of tension while trying to stop more mass mayhem in the city is riveting. I particularly enjoyed seeing Peabody's personal story line become more humanized and complex.
An enjoyable element of the books is the larger-than-life action and formula, and all the high-tech toys used to help with the solutions so that there is a James-Bondish air about the stories. One can be sure when one picks up one of the J. D. Robb books, fun will be had by all!Get more detail about Loyalty in Death (In Death, No. 9).

Discount Think Twice: Harnessing the Power of Counterintuition
This short and easy-reading book packs a real wallop when it comes to identifying and explaining common mental tendencies that can impair our judgment. These tendencies may be hard-wired into our DNA as a result of events thousands of years ago. For example, suppose that while two cavemen were walking down a path, they both heard a sound in a nearby bush. One caveman bolts immediately, while the other stops and thinks to himself, "I wonder what that is?" While he's thinking, a rattlesnake strikes out and bites him--and he dies shortly thereafter. That caveman's DNA didn't get passed on to future generations, while the DNA of the caveman who ran first and thought later does. So it may make sense that in uncertain or stressful situations, we have a tendency to react quickly. But modern society's situations may call for careful thought more than immediate reaction, so at times even smart people can be led by their instinctive responses into poor decisions. As author Michael Mauboussin puts it, "Smart people make poor decisions because they have the same factory settings on their mental software as the rest of us."
This book is filled with interesting examples of how our instinctive first responses can lead to less than optimal choices. I'll relate two of the book's examples, so you can get a feel for what's in the book, and then you can hopefully decided better whether you want to buy it. The first example that comes to mind may be called the "inside versus outside" view. To illustrate "inside" thinking, consider the case of race horse Big Brown in 2008. He won the Kentucky Derby by four and three-quarters lengths, and then he won the Preakness Stakes by five and one-quarter lengths. Prior to Big Brown's attempt to win the Belmont Stakes (and thus capture racing's Triple Crown), he looked great, and his owner expressed a lot of confidence. On race day for the Belmont, Big Brown's odds were 3 - 10, making him the easy (75% likelihood of winning) favorite. That's the details-oriented "inside" view. The "outside" view is that of the 29 prior horses to compete in the Belmont after winning both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, only 11 won the Belmont (about 38%). Further, since 1950 (perhaps when better training methods were more commonly practiced) only 3 of 20 horses (15%) with a chance to win the Triple Crown won the Belmont. In short, the inside view was optimistic, but the outside view wasn't. It turns out that Big Brown finished ninth in the Belmont.
A briefer second example of how our "mental models" affect our thinking and decision making, concerns French and German wines available for sale in a store. When French music was played, customers chose French wine 77% of the time, yet when German music was played in the store, customers chose German wine 73% of the time. The customers were asked whether they heard the music and whether it affected their choices. Most customers recalled hearing the music, but they denied that it had anything to do with their choices.
Okay, perhaps these examples will help you understand the kind of reasoning processes that author Mauboussin examines and discusses in Think Twice. Indeed, the book's title is the shortest advice he has to give to people facing situations where instinctive responses may impede the best decisions. As they say, forewarned is for forearmed.

Buying The Trump Card: Playing to Win in Work and Life
I want to thank Casey for taking the time for writing such a clear and helpful review. Even though I have not read the book. I can't help but notice the HUGE difference between someone born with a silver spoon versus someone that has to earn it all the good old fashion way.... with a lot of hard work and only if your lucky you might be at the right time and place, because hard work does NOT ALWAYS determine or guarantee your success. Thats not counting if you are any kind of a minority whether gay or non-white, over 40 years old, etc., you can add 100 times harder to that.
On the other side, she does look like a very well grounded person, which is more than I can say for most "regular" people that think they are too good to work, since they think they are too "special" or celebrity wanna be's. Obviously she comes from a very good upbringing and not only in the monetary sense. I am happy that she has taken great advantage of all her GREAT priveledges and done something very useful! One thing that I don't see enough of is her giving back to the less fortunate, at least not as obvious.... and I don't mean for tax purposes! I still wish her the best, even though I can't help but feel a little jealous that I have nothing compared to her, but yet had to work and sacrifice soooooo much to get what I have, and still working to be able to keep it!!!! I am in my forties. My suggestions to those starting.... DON'T HAVE KIDS UNTIL YOU CAN AFFORD IT!!! I have personally seen how people get what they want first and then figure out how to maintain it! A bad way to start!!! Get yourself together and then have a kid... not too many though... this society its very tough and it seems to get tougher with time. When the teen years set in.... God have mercy upon you!!! It is the hardest job you will EVER HAVE! Please don't misunderstand me and think that I don't think having kids is good, I just think most people don't plan it correctly and then end up working 100 times harder to get what they want and sometimes at the expense of their children... that's reality! and yes I have 1 child, so I speak by experience. Thank goodness I did not let anyone pressure me in having more, and believe me, I was pressured! Best to all of you readers! the important thing is to look for wisdom and reading is the best way... filtering what you read is another. (I apologize for any gramatical errors)

Order The Idea of Justice
This is an accessible yet dense book. Sen essentially argues that it is extremely difficult and likely past the ability of people to start axiomatically about how a justice system should be formed and deduce the practical results. This stems from the fact that the elements that people define as the parameters of their freedom are multidimensional versus something reducible to say utility, or even a ranking system of priorities that Rawls prioritized on. The repurcussion of this lack of strict relationships between the various degrees of "freedom" that people live under he reasons (along the lines of mathematical economists) there dont exist strict "optimal" solutions. He makes the point clear by referring to self referential utility and the fact that in such systems and especially the real world, our freedoms are all interconnected and thus there are sometimes no way to go about ranking justice from a bottom up perspective.
I think its hard to not agree with that as a thesis. An obvious example of an incredibly difficult practical problem to solve via ranking individual freedoms would be something like the environment and global warming. Another current example is solving moral hazard problems, especially within finance- there are a MASS of perspectives of right and wrong depending on how one weighs aggregate policy repurcussions against the need to promote lesson learning. Sen argues that problems which involve large systems need to be looked at as a complex system and judged by the repurcussions of the social architecture and then the "wisdom of crowds" both local and global shed light on the greatest injustices which should then be dealt with. Sen takes a very practical approach to justice as the complexities of trying to actually define a system of justice in a philosophical axiomatic way is unlikely to yield the results that are hoped for due to the multitude of priorities and competing interests. He doubts the philosophical exercises that give weight to the conclusion that our measures of right and wrong are all on the same side of the scale that we define as right and wrong (ie right is right wrong is wrong under veil of ignorance) and articulates this with one of his opening example of the kids and what their rights/entitlements are. To be honest, i would doubt that justice philosophers dont readily acknowledge a lot of what Sen says, but defer to the fact that one cannot define justice in a philophical sense from the top down. That is what things like common law and political lawmaking have evolved from (one can debate whether this is effective but our institutions allow for bottom up modification based off top down repurcussions), our inherint understanding that as things evolve, so does the justice system. Things that shape judges and political opinions are often intellectual movements that originated via people doing thought experiments of how we might be biased and what are ways to remove that (veil of ignorance).
Im surprised at the dissillusionment in the theory of rawls. It has served an extremely valuable service, and i think those people who work on describing new social contract ideas have the potential to be very influential on institutional arragnement. Similarly so will social choice theorists as they will counterbalance some of the over deduction used from foundational exploration by philosophers. Its hard not to see how both are necessary places for people to be working. One reviewer critiques the lack of embracing behavioral economics and the leaning on more walrusian style actors. I personally dont get that at all, and see the whole thesis as evidence that people cant be reduced to agents operating under utility maximization. One cant start from a framework of behavioural finance because it has no assumption basis from which results follow, its primarily a results based field for which results are used to work out internal dynamics- which is what Sen is saying we need to adopt.
All in all, the book has a LOT of material and ideas, it gets you interested in more, but is really far from complete. I didnt get a sense of chapters following one another particularly, but perhaps there is no real way of doing that well either given the amount Sen was trying to cover. I plan on reading more on the subject. The mental prodding the book does is reason enough to buy it, but this book definately wont leave one feeling like, ah, this is the final chapter, not even close. This sort of book really should open up debate, in a constructive way, but is unable to make one feel like we have the tools to measure justice in a more fair way.Get more detail about The Idea of Justice.

Shop For Seven Days in the Art World
I'm only half way through this book, and I already I'm a big fan. Sarah Thornton's book not only provides great insight into the world of fine art (the auctions, the galleries, the collectors, the art schools and the artists' studios), but it is a very enjoyable read. Fascinating and funny. I'm going to recommend this book to a lot of my friends.Get more detail about Seven Days in the Art World.
SPIN Selling
A breath of fresh air. The profession of Sales is plagued with all sorts of nonsense, most of it annecdotal at best. Little actual research has been done to identify good processes for sales professionals and consequently we get idiotic advice ranging from "Always Be Closing" and endless manipulative closing techniques for doing so, to recommendations on how to sell "anything to anybody." Such sales tactics are precisely the reason salespeople have been saddled with negative stereotypes.
SPIN Selling is the result of extensive observation and analysis of sales calls by behavioral researcher Neil Rackham. His findings are both practical and useful, and are well presented in this book. As sellers, we might give some thought to how we would like to be treated as customers - something that should not be a revelation, but is. We should understand the customer's goals and objectives and help them be successful if we want to be successful. Forget your scripted sales pitch, leave your brochures in your briefcase, ask questions and listen to your customers to understand their needs BEFORE presenting your product. Surprisingly, this will actually shorten the selling cycle and will result in better long-term customer relationships. Rackham's concept of an "Advance" as an objective way to measure the progress of a sales call is, alone, worth the price of this book.
As a sales professional with many years' experience, and now as sales training manager for a division of a Fortune 500 company, I highly recommend this book and the methodology Rackham describes. There are other good books for salespeople - but if I could only recommend one, this would be it.

ECONned: How Unenlightened Self Interest Undermined Democracy and Corrupted Capitalism Review
This book gives broad historical detail of the economic, judicial, and political cultural mindset that led to the latest economic crisis. Centuries ago Adam Smith observed that individual self interests "often" were identical to social interest, while also observing that individuals rarely met except to "fix prices" and "monopolize". Yves Smith makes a careful, well documented case naming professional trends and individual actors that cherry picked Adam Smith to enable the predation that Adam Smith warned against. It requires perhaps a bit more understanding of what is taught as "economics" in our universities than say Simon Johnson's "Thirteen Bankers" or Joe Stiglitz " Freefall", but it builds a much more documented and detailed case for how individuals and corporations have "captured" the regulatory process, and subverted the political process to essentially legalize theft from the general public, and makes an especially good case about how mathematics brought not only rigor to economics, but mortis. That two of the top economists from the half that have not succumbed to pretentiousness and self importance- Nouriel Roubini and Lord Skildelsky tag it as "must" and "required" reading gives a sense of how well written and important this book is.Get more detail about ECONned: How Unenlightened Self Interest Undermined Democracy and Corrupted Capitalism.
The Design of Business: Why Design Thinking is the Next Competitive Advantage Top Quality
This is a top thinker sharing some good thinking. Which makes it in my mind, a must read.
The Knowledge Funnel that Roger Martin defines points to how information gets sifted from "mystery" to "heuristic" to "algorithm" and how that impacts decision making, strategy, innovation. This simple model will probably be as well known in future as Jim Collins "hedgehog concept". It's both intuitive and analytically rich in how a reader can come to understand it.
I was surprised to find the book "design thinking" which is quite popular today because i think it is more "good thinking" but i understand the need to fit into a bigger theme to be more easily consumed.

Relic This instant
I recently picked up this book for a casual read, however I soon discovered that Preston & Child weren't going to let that happen. I couldn't set the book down until I finished it. The only disappoining thing about the book is that when I finished it, I was left wanting more. Highly recommended.Get more detail about Relic.
