Low Price 104 Activities That Build: Self-Esteem, Teamwork, Communication, Anger Management, Self-Discovery, Coping Skills


If this book was titled "40 Activities..." I would give it 4-5 stars. Yes, many if not all of the activities require various materials, but for the most part they are everyday, common materials like straws, pens, paper, paper clips, etc. My problem with this book is the highly repetitive nature of the activities. The premise of the activities are the same with variations so small that it's a stretch to call them separate activities.
For example, in the Self-esteem section so very many of the activities call for items (envelopes, flower petals made from construction paper, balloons, etc.) to be passed around to members of the group in order to write a positive comment about the owner of the item being passed around. So, while the materials used are different the basic premise, as previously stated, is the same.
Here's a perfect example: One activity calls for each member to write his/her name on their respective envelope. Each envelope is then hole-punched and threaded onto a piece of string. The envelopes remain hanging throughout the various group sessions and members are encouraged to write positive comments about their group mates. They then put these comments in the respective member's envelope. Contrastly, another activity, calls for each member to write his/her name on their respective envelope which are then passed around to every other member who then writes a positive comment on a piece of paper and places in the respective member's envelope.
So, as you can see, the activities themselves are decent, but there is simply far too much repetition.

Buying The PMP Exam: How to Pass on Your First Try


I took and passed the PMP in Jan 2010!!! I took a study course with another well known PMP speciality company and it DID NOT prepare me as much as this book and online course did. I bought the book on Amazon (about $50) and signed up for the Velociteach online course for $99.00. It was well worth the money! This book was organized in a manner that made my initial studying VERY easy to understand and to begin confidence (especially if you aren't familiar with the PMI Project Mgt concepts). Once I got down and dirty into the studying I still found this book a great help to me!!!

Get this book if you're new to project management or not!! The way the book is organized is much better than other study guides. Remember the PMP exam is not as much about your PM experience, but your understanding of the PMI concepts and processes. Bottom line:
USE THIS BOOK for sure, but highly recommend the online course as well. I found that although not every single question was covered in the book the vast majority of concepts were covered in this book. Much success on the exam!

Ignore Everybody: and 39 Other Keys to Creativity This instant


I happened to find Hugh MacLeod on twitter one day, and then got to his website. He tweets were funny, he wasn't letting people follow him who were not from Texas. I found his "art" concept interesting. As a marketing and consulting guy, people doing new and creative things intrigue me. I'm not often a reader or a book like this, along the lines of unleashing your creativity. I'm glad I didn't let the Amazon reviews sway me. While I might agree with some of the Amazon comments that the arty business cards are off topic most of the time and they don't flow, most of them make some sense, at least the wording anyway. I'm not an "arty" person, design often gets lost on me, so I had to rely on the verbal message, and in a lot of the cards, I would either laugh, or really think about the message.

The book is full of one man's outlook and story of success. MacLeod weaves some interesting stories to make some points. I found some of the tips quite refreshing. I also found myself several times saying to myself "that's a good point". The writing contains some good old common sense that people seem to overlook as they get busy with life.

This book will not take you long to read. Give it a chapter or two, if it doesn't grab you, stop reading, but I'm willing to bet that this book is just different enough to keep you turning pages. This is a very guick book to read, I think I read it in parts of three days. Understanding Options Immediately


Several reviewers have mentioned that this book is too narrow and simple on the techniques described, but I believe they miss the point of the book when it's aimed at people who are new to options. This book offers a quick read and out of several beginner options books out there, I would pick this as the first to get started. I have to stress that this book is for beginners - meaning people who don't know what options are and wants to gain a better understanding in a language that is easy to understand. The author takes a friendly approach in using real life examples for explaining how options work, and I think for the visual learners out there, this teaching style would be very helpful. After that, the author goes into the four most common techniques in trading options and simply gets the reader's feet wet. Until now I had only encountered de Tocqueville on the forensic examiner's table, so to speak - excerpts culled form the whole body and examined in isolation, inserted into op-ed pieces which were taken out of context to justify a political viewpoint while providing a semblance of historical authority.

Having read the entire first section, I am now able to discern the genius of de Toqueville at picking up on the features and contradictions in the American "model"; now I understand why he is so often quoted by libertarians, neo-cons and socialists - and everybody in between - to justify their point of view. But the whole work is much greater than the individual parts.

Emotional Intelligence 2.0 Order Now


First off I made a huge error in the purchase process when deciding to buy this book or not. I failed to read all the comments.

After having read the book I find two things about the book that really bugs me.

1.) The authors succinctly attempts to describe man in a neatly packaged deal that incorporates as its only content your intelligence, your emotional inteligence, and your personality. They state that your IQ and your personality are static and are incapable of changing throughout the course of your life. Only your emotional intelligence can be manipulated. I wholeheartedly disagree with them. Your actual ability to process material at faster rates may not change over the course of your life but the way you process the material can be managed. For instance, your brain may be a Pentium 4 chip (although more and more lately I think kids behave more like a 386) and your intelligence may be closely related to your brain's ability to process information, but intelligence is so much more than natural abilities to process raw data.

If you learn how to manage and process information differently then you don't necessarily need a faster and more intelligent brain to improve your level of intelligence. To say that people are only as smart as the day they were born is like saying water can only be water in it's three physical states. You neatly draw attention to the mundane fact that yea water can only be gas, liquid, or solid, but water can be so much more than that. Sometimes intelligence is not merely the physical state but also the intent and action behind it as well. Water can be soup, soda, coolant, etc... You may be a Pentium4 but be able to perform better than a duo core chip with a fragmented hardftive by bettering and refining yourself through the process of learning thusI think intelligence can be increased overall. If they insist that intelligence is purely your speed and rate of processing of your brain then perhaps they should then stop referring to intelligence and simply call it brain power.

In addition, they say your personality is stable throughout your entire life and thus cannot be changed. I'm certain everyone here on Amazon either has known someone who has changed their personality (ie going from being introverted to introverted or vice versa) or have experienced it yourself. When I was a kid I hated meeting people and crowds because I was a shy kid. I didn't know a lot of stuff to say and when teachers and professors asked me to read out loud or give a presentation to the whole class forgettaboutit! I didn't like parties or going clubbing (at first) and would rather go play chess at Starbucks.

Then through a process of experiencing life and learning life skills and communication skills and just knowing more information I was able to change. I thrive on public speaking and I love going out and meeting people (although I actually can find enjoyment in either staying home or go on a social outting depending on the weather, my mood, who is going, and where we are going all plays a role in my deciding if I'm introverted or extroverted at the time).

My problem with the authors is that they seem to pigeonhole people and say that people cannot change intellectully nor can they change their own personality or characteristic traits. If this was realy the case then a cheater/liar/thief/murderer/DUI can never change their ways because that's their personailty (characteristic flaw is weakness in resisting lust, impulse, greed, etc...). I've known people who are serial cheaters in college and couldn't keep their @$@! In their pants (women too not only guys... Actually know more women that cheated than men). Now they are married with kids and are committed to their relationship. As they have stated as to why they cheated and gave into their temptation it's because they were young and felt reckless and wanted to experience. They still have impulses but overall they don't feel the urge to act out the impulse anymore because they've been there before and they prefer stability now.

According to them the Holy Grail of change can only happen through changing your EQ. This is completely a biased point of view. In the book they make bold statements that state "people who are low in EQ and job performance can match their colleagues who excel in both - solely by working to improve their EQ."

So what they are saying is by improving only on your EQ while disregarding knowledge and improvement on skillsets you will perform just as well as that colleague that operates with a superchip processor with an IQ of 175 and has high EQ with a your presumably slower processor. Gypsies once sold medicine in the past offering people cures saying that the only thing that can save them is the stuff the are peddling. Shameless self-promotion if you ask me. Imagine for a second two physicists, an average but still very smart physicist who has an relatively average IQ of 129 and a low EQ and Einstein who is both high on IQ and EQ. The authors' stance is that if the average physicist improves his EQ to that of Einstein's or better he will achieve the same as Einstein. Right and if you dress a pig up as cow te pig would fetch the same price at a cattle auction. It's still about substance when grading even success right? The first physicist still would not achieve as much as Einstein would. What I have a problem with the authors here is that they almost recklessly and foolishly push the idea that EQ is the one and only thing (or at least the one thing that has the absolute most impact) that determines whether people perform admirably at a job. This is a reckless stance because there will be people out there that would actually believe that their lazy no-knowledge butts would start performing like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs while disregarding the fact that both Jobs and Gates continually improve upon themselves in very non-EQ ways.

2.) Besides Who Moved My Cheese and How Full is Your Bucket I can't recall another book that has bigger print than this book. EQ is a very important and complex subject that cannot be adequately covered in this short book. I'm with other reviewers in regards to this. It's like them telling you to boil water and throw the chicken in to make chicken soup. How long do I boil it? How about the amount of seasoning? Do I shred the chicken or cut up into pieces? Maybe I should buy precut pieces? I know making chicken soup is slightly more complicated than simply boiling water and throwing chicken in it. To me this is indicative as to their basis of information that they are presenting in this book. Too narrowminded and shortsighted to be taken seriously. Afterall, you wouldn't buy a cookbook that explains the reasons for cooking and why people get sick from undercooked food but then when showing you the recipe all it tells you is to start throwing things in the crock pot but not telling you the amounts to use or what cut of meat or how long to cook right?

Another indication that the authors are a bit shallow in their content and commitment in writing an actual book of well informed and useful substance is their online EQ quiz. I've seen more indepth quizes on cereal boxes. And just in case you're thinking it's not about the size but the quality of the content questions... No. They hve like 3 or 4 questions regarding each of the four EQ competencies. After you answer the handful of questions they magically tell you how you rate emotionally.

"Think and Grow Rich", good title...GREAT BOOK. There is so much more to this book than what the title says. It doesn't have to be read by those who just want to gain mass amounts of wealth. And it is not for those who want to get rich quick. This book is one of those books that should be read by all, yet read by those who have matured in life.

Full of great principles and work ethics. No wonder that our Grand-Parents (for those of you that are around 40 or so) were such great people, they pulled thru the depression, even though it was tough for them, in the end it made them better people...Napoleon Hill was one of those people. I was so excited to see another book by Maria Bartiromo after her previous book "Use the News".

I bought the book without even sampling it. What a mistake. A couple hundred sound bites without any substance.

Save The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom


There is a silver lining to being a former prisoner of war - the story. Many hostages have told their narrative in the form of a book, but few have obtained the prestige of The Long Walk. The Long Walk was ghostwritten by Ronald Downingin 1956 based on conversations he had with Slavomir Rawicz. Rawicz has never actually written a book of his own, and his story of escape from a Siberian gulag has many critics. But, regardless of the criticisms, The Long Walk delivers both historical and philosophical knowledge in a way that is both endurable and entertaining.
When Downing wrote The Long Walk Rawicz was the only primary source, leading to widespread suspicion among scholars; possibly none more damning than Russian historical records. Rawicz's story begins with a detailed account of an interrogation he endured at a Soviet prison camp, which closely parallels the torture endured by Winston Smith in the fictional novel 1984. While the records do show that Rawicz had been imprisoned in 1942, they contradict Rawicz's claim as to why he was being interrogated. Rawicz claimed that he had been accused of being a Polish spy, while the records show that Rawicz had been accused of killing a NKVD officer. After being imprisoned, according to the book, Racowicz devises a successful strategy for him and six others to escape the Siberian gulag he was forced to labor in.. But, Soviet records, including statements allegedly written by Rawicz, show that Rawicz had been released as part of the 1942 general amnesty of Poles in the USSR, negating the possibility of a "trek to freedom".
Of course there is little doubt that the Soviet officials had fabricated or destroyed many legal documents in an attempt to marginalize the many war crimes that had been committed. In fact, at the beginning of The Long Walk, Rawicz allegedly was subjected to torture as an attempt to coerce him into signing a document professing his own guilt. Therefore, theoretically, compulsory signing of documents also may have been used to debunk any future claims of Soviet cruelty.
Despite the attacks on the validity of Rawicz's story, the book raises critical philosophical questions. The fugitives' entire quest forces the reader to explore the endurance of their own determination. The tenacity of Rawicz and his six friends spawns the question of just how valuable freedom is. Were these escapees' extraordinary humans, or is liberty so essential to happiness that weeks of unfathomable torture are not even substantial to dissuade man from achieving it?
Since there is no inherent value that each person places on freedom, the claim cannot be made that freedom is essential to each individual. In fact, because of the controversy regarding the validity of Racwicz's story, we cannot certify that Racwicz himself actually had the determination to accomplish the feat told in the story. Therefore, does someone exist that actually does have the determination and will power to face nearly impossible odds in order to achieve freedom? Are there people that are so uncompromising that liberty becomes indispensable to them?
Fortunately, Captain Rupert Mayne, an intelligence officer in Calcutta, said that in 1942 he had debriefed three emaciated men claiming to have escaped from a Siberian camp, adding to the probability that at least three men carried out the dubious feat. Also, Witold Glinski, a Polish WWII veteran living in the UK, claimed that the story was true, but it had actually happened to him, not Racwicz. Therefore, most likely, Racwicz was either telling the truth about his experience, or had stole the story from Glinski. Either way, Racwicz did deliver it to a mass audience, and reflected to that audience just how precious freedom can be.

Raciwicz's reliability is not definitive and, therefore, neither are the events described in the story. But, although the relation to history has been damaged, it is not destroyed. Some exceedingly valuable historical knowledge can still be salvaged from the wreckage. Even if Raciwicz was being dishonest, he did get his facts straight. Many former prisoners have testified that the conditions and treatment endured in gulags correlate with Raciwicz's description. Secondly, the book recounts the atmosphere of animosity that prevailed during 1940's Europe. Europe was in the middle of World War II, and Racwicz's account does a tremendous job of presenting the alliances and general dispositions that people had toward others outside their nationality. Lastly, The Long Walk gives
the reader a description of the cultures of Mongolia, China, and India. In each country Raciwicz encountered natives, and described the rituals and customs of those natives, in turn broadening the culture of the reader.
Therefore, even if the story is untrue, Racwicz delivers historical knowledge in an entertaining way. This Book is a disappointing presentation of Miss Post's guide to Doing the Right Thing. It's not formatted, as it's been scanned by Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and printed without illustrations. It's just not pretty. As the book is still in print and this is not a rarity (the benefit of buying OCR books scanned from old musty gems) you should just go ahead and buy the newest edition. It'll be a much lovelier read.

Where To Buy Breakthrough Rapid Reading


The book has helped me save time on my reading. However the content is sometimes ambiguous and confusing, leaving me wondering which drill exactly it was talking about. If there's a more updated version, get that.

If you're willing to deal with a little ambiguity though, it is worth your time to read and run through the drills. The approach seems more comprehensive than several others I have previewed prior to choosing this book.

Topics covered include: linear reading, visual reading, strategies for understanding and structuring different kinds of content. The main value is in the week by week drills, which step you through practicing comprehension and speed independently, then bringing them back together.

Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations This instant


This book made me really appreciate Malcolm Gladwell. Shirky certainly knows his stuff, and has interesting (although predictable) examples that illustrate his point; reading another telling of the Linux and Wikipedia story offers little excitement but some really interesting ideas.

One thing that Gladwell does well (sorry, Shirky, but you have a tough yardstick to measure up to) is that each chapter is a (seemingly) unrelated element that, slowly, becomes part of a larger picture. And, when you think you've got it, Gladwell gives you another, unexpected insight. Add his lesser known examples and it is clear why Gladwell is in the position that he is. Read "The Tipping Point" and "Outliers" if you have not, yet.

That said, Shirky is no slacker. His book is solid. Indeed, it moved me from seeing social media as something happening to others to something that I could use to enhance my life. Dave Peterson (Founder and Chairman of North Highland) makes that book required reading for all employees. I have been in love with David Maister's thought ever since. Simply put, David is the finest writer on professional services I have ever read, period.

Written explicitly for professional-service firms, this book insists that success comes only when you gain trust of your clients. It even lays out a mathematical formula (one of which I was highly skeptical--at first) for measuring the trust you have developed with the client.

Sentence Correction GMAT Preparation Guide, 4th Edition (Manhattan GMAT Preparation Guides) Order Now


I didn't take a class, but I have alot of friends who have and have used the Kaplan book and practice tests in addition to the Manhattan. Manhattan prep material and tests are head and shoulders above Kaplan. My only wish is that I had started with the Manhattan series and not even worried about Kaplan. Kaplan may have the brand name, but the fact that Manhattan focuses only on the GMAT shines through. The material goes wayyy more in depth, and it really leverages the other best source of practice material you have, the Official Guide (it has a great feature called rephrasing that references the OG problems directly to give data sufficiency help. It almost makes so much sense that it seems obvious but ingenious at the same time. Why not use the actual old test problems provided by the GMAC as much as you can?).

I wasn't going to buy the whole series but was so impressed by the first book I used (Sentence Correction), that I bought a couple of the quantitative prep books. I was so impressed by those, that I ended up buying all the rest of them. I can not stress enough how much more focused and useful this material is than Kaplan. When used in conjunction with the Official Guide, you have everything you need to break 700.

The things these books provide make so much sense as the best way to prepare, that it makes you wonder why everyone else doesn't do it. My guess is that Manhattan benefits from a focused business model of limiting itself to the GMAT. If you're not looking to score that well and only need to practice some and get used to the questions, the Official Guide is enough. But the Manhattan series is also nice in that it allows you to pick and choose the certain topics you need extra help with. Also, by only buying one book, you get access to six practice tests that are very difficult and provide invaluable information in its readouts of your performance (much more detailed and useful than Kaplan's. Hate to keep hating on Kaplan, but it's the only thing I have to compare to. It's not horrible really, it just pales in comparison to Manhattan. I think of the Kaplan material like I think of McDonald's, very well-known but pretty junky. It'll fill you up, but you won't feel great afterward...)

I've never taken the time to review any items on Amazon.com before, but I have been so impressed with this product that I felt compelled to let others know about it.

Don't waste your money on a class, get the Manhattan series instead. You'll save over a thousand dollars and be better prepared as well!

I was not a major real estate investor, just an average homeowner, but I had a "friend" who was a mortgage broker for Countrywide. He kept pushing me into (what I know now were) increasingly worse loans. At the top of the market he came to me with an income property that was such a great deal that if I didn't jump on it he was going to buy it himself (and I believed that? What a sucker!) I didn't listen to my inner voice which kept telling me that none of this added up. Instead I deferred to him because I thought he was an "expert" who knew so much more than me (turns out he didn't even have a high school diploma and had only been selling mortgages for 6 months when I met him... before that he sold used cars!) I also thought that he had my best interest at heart, when, in fact, the only thing he cared about was his commissions.

I'm currently in a short-sale on that investment property: it's in escrow for 1/3(!!) of what I paid for it and we were lucky to get that. My home was foreclosed on a year ago. Thirty years of excellent credit is destroyed. I'm not blaming the mortgage broker, I could have rejected any of his offers. I was just under-educated about how real estate mortgages REALLY work, but not anymore.

As I read this book, it was like reading a postmortem of my financial situation. I cannot tell you how many times while reading it I shouted, "That Bastard! That's exactly what he did to me!" As I dissected my mistakes and the ways in which I was conned, and learned how to avoid similar traps in the future, I began to feel as though I might actually have some hope of fixing this mess and restoring my good credit and, perhaps, even owning property again someday.

But even if I don't ever buy another piece of real estate, I'm glad I read this book because now at least I understand what happened to me (and to so many otherwise well-educated, successful people,) and I don't feel like such a complete failure anymore.
