Lencioni begins with a brief, quick-read fictional story as a vehicle to illustrate his overall philosophy of management. At the core is the belief that "smart" differentiators are short lived. "Smart" differentiators include operational, strategic, and technological advantages. Because these are relatively easy to adopt, competitors quickly adopt them and advantage is lost.

To truly differentiate, 0rganizations must be "healthy". In his terminology, the four "healthy" attributes are:

Build and Maintain a Cohesive Leadership Team;
Create Organizational Clarity;
Over-Communicate Organizational Clarity; and
Reinforce Organizational Clarity Through Human Systems.

Of course, these ideas are hardly new, but the lack of disciple around most cultures forbid their implementation.
