Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose Order Now

First the facts: Tony Hsieh is smarter than your average guy, and willing to work hard. He had an early dot com success, made some money, and squandered most of it partying. He gave Zappos its first funding, then later became the company's CEO, and led Zappos to tremendous success before it was purchased by Amazon for over one billion dollars. This book chronicles those events.

If you know anything about Zappos, you know they have an almost insane commitment to customer satisfaction. You may not know that they have an intense corporate culture around the theme of "Delivering Happiness." This book also explores both of these topics in some detail.

However, this is NOT an in-depth analysis of how to run an internet retailer. While IT, inventory, financing, drop shipping, vendor relationships, pricing, etc. are all discussed as the story unfolds, none are covered in any detail. This book is about Tony's experiences and growth in building Zappos. He does not attempt to instruct you how to do the same.

I enjoyed the book, and learned a number of useful lessons. Tony's analogies comparing poker and businesses were somewhat of an eye opener. What particularly shocked me was how little preparation or research went into some of their most important decisions. It seems that, at least in Zappo's case, smart people with the ability to quickly change direction after recognizing a mistake can do as well or better than most companies who do deep analysis and diligence in advance.

Highly recommended insider tale of how Zappos succeeded. Just don't expect any analysis, because there isn't any.Get more detail about Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose.

Clairvoyance and Occult Powers Right now

I see there are some highly positive reviews.

Honestly, I cannot understand why. In fact, I am very annoyed at the author.

This book lacks what it promises: practical instructions. He states over and over that he is going to share the "secret instructions" on how to do these wonderful things, but he never does. Where are the exercises and instructions you promised me Panchadasi?!

This book is as far from an experimental manual as far could be.

He gives only the shortest of instructions, as if in a passing manner.

He may be good at using the abilities, but he certainly is lousy at teaching them.

Skip this book. Find something else. Trust me.

p.s. If you have a book suggestion for me on the subject of actually learning how to be clairvoyant through practice, please send me the link.Get more detail about Clairvoyance and Occult Powers.

Lowest Price The Ultimate Question: Driving Good Profits and True Growth

Bain consultant, Fred Reichheld, offers a fascinating and original take on customer loyalty. The Ultimate Question provides the framework by which companies can elevate beyond customer satisfaction to loyalty and profit by using a "Net Promoter Score".

While much as been written about satisfaction, the Net Promoter Score is a lever that can be used to build and sustain competitive advantage. While the point was made in the first couple of chapters the NPS concept is both powerful and practical. This book is useful not only in terms of measuring loyalty but in shaping strategy based on customer feedback and insight.Get more detail about The Ultimate Question: Driving Good Profits and True Growth.

Save Home Buying For Dummies, 4th Edition

received this book as a gift from one who knew that my husband and i are embarking on the search for our first house. it seemed pretty thorough and informative, but when tested for nuts and bolts, i've found it lacking. for instance, we've been to a few open houses and determined our budget, so what now? do we talk to an agent first? get pre-approved for a loan? impossible to figure out from the book. and on a more basic level, i can't stand to read the prose for very long with all the snide comments, that i guess are meant to be funny.... i was inspired to come rate the book on amazon by the especially involved dig at people who have supplemented their education with graduate degrees, or should i say 'extra pieces of paper for the wall'? blech. i've heard it before. spend a little more time on the homebuying advice and less on the self-derogatory humor, eric.Get more detail about Home Buying For Dummies, 4th Edition.

Cheapest Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman

As a business major and activist, this book was insightful to the successes and hurdles of a business. I always despised the mindset and attitudes of your average businessmen, but still wanted to open up a business. I think Chouinard created a great guide/blue print for business-minded people who want to be the freshest, sustainable, quality-driven, eco-friendly, plus all the things that a common business is not composed of. He opens up a door to innovation, not just for the business, but within the business as well.

He brings up a good subject that we should all be aware of. Every and all human activity leaves some kind of waste or foot print that is irreversible and harmful to the Earth. Chouinard wanted to become a part of the solution and from the very beginning made strides to lessen, and if possible reverse, the carbon foot print that Patagonia made.

My only criticism is the content deep in the book are extremely detailed, repetitious, and interconnected. Then, the book lagged and became a little boring. Still insightful, informative, and with purpose, but it dragged on.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone trying to start a business, business major students, Patagonia consumers.. - really this book can be related to many different people.Get more detail about Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman.

Buying Dance Upon the Air (Three Sisters Island Trilogy)

This is the first book in the three sisters trilogy. Ms. Roberts is a great writer so the writing flows well and the story manages to surround you as you read. Wonderful imagery and setting pull you right in and make you feel at home.

Overall, this is a sweet romance and almost a "coming of age" story about a young woman finding herself after an abusive marriage and life on the run. The magic and witch-craft aspect of the story line is more just a little bit of context for the romance. Unlike other books in the paranormal genre, this one only touches upon it. The story is driven more by the characters and a need for healing than anything else.

If you are in the mood for a story of healing and homecoming with just a dash of magic, then this is for you!Get more detail about Dance Upon the Air (Three Sisters Island Trilogy).

Order No Logo: 10th Anniversary Edition with a New Introduction by the Author

this is more than just a "worthy" book, it's also a good read. The new introduction extends the thesis to politics, and to Barack Obama's campaign specifically. This is the kind of thing we should occasionally read to keep in touch with our world - and it's more than a should, I want to re-emphasize. The research is impeccable, but doesn't intrude itself into your reading. By which I mean, it doesn't feel as though you are reading a text book. It is thought provoking, a little bit shocking - okay, more than a little bit - and you will be very glad that you read it.Get more detail about No Logo: 10th Anniversary Edition with a New Introduction by the Author.

The Exceptional Presenter: A Proven Formula to Open Up and Own the Room Top Quality

I present from time to time. I've always enjoyed it. I've been told often that I'm a good public presenter. (I'm also told not to brag too much)

I've read several communication books which in some instances deeply cover the mechanics of this subject. I'm the kind of guy who reads, practices, adopts, and uses self-improvement stuff all the time. Just about everything the author covers in this book isn't new and it isn't revolutionary. But, he doesn't make any claims that it is, either. But, if nothing else, he does a really good job at a couple of things. First, it's written so that people at any level can read this book and probably become better at presenting. It's straight forward and intuitively put together. Second, you get just enough on body-language, linguistics, rapport, tonality (among others) to be able to use these skills with ease. It's apparent that the author knows a lot more on these topics but uses self-restraint so as not to lose the audience.

If you're an accountant and you have to present to a bunch of people in a week and you're freaking out: read this book before you do anything else. If you present from time to time and you've gotten pretty comfortable with it, there are better books for you. It just depends on what you want to hone or improve.Get more detail about The Exceptional Presenter: A Proven Formula to Open Up and Own the Room.

A Caress of Twilight (Meredith Gentry, Book 2) This instant

I liked this second book in the Meredith Gentry series. The plot and world-building was interesting, as was the fey political intrigue. That said, sometimes the narrative got bogged down with lengthy political explanations. This occurred several times in the book and it slowed down the action too much for it to be a page-turner for me. Other than that, it was a good addition to the series and I'm looking forward to the reading the next one.Get more detail about A Caress of Twilight (Meredith Gentry, Book 2).

Paul and Me: Fifty-three Years of Adventures and Misadventures with My Pal Paul Newman Get it now!

I read this book over the space of two days. I thoroughly enjoyed it. You will find no dirty laundry being trotted out. Hotchner was a friend and his writing never betrays his love for the man.He has given us a warm and affectionate accounting of the man we all suspected was good and decent. Hollywood may have made him famous and I did enjoy many of his movies, but what I loved most about this man was the way he quietly turned his own good fortune into good works for mankind. He earned hundreds of millions through the creation of Newman's Own food empire. This book is a testament to keeping fun and honesty forefront in business deals and how magically joy and ambition work successfully together. For Newman it was all a wonderful lark and he contributed his success to huge amounts of good luck. But reading this book will have you thinking that it was more than good luck, good looks and charisma kissing his long, wonderful celebration of life. Without a doubt his success was largely due do his giving his all and then sharing the wealth he produced. He made a decision early on not to take himself too seriously, yet he most seriously did use his many talents. He shared his good fortune with the world. He found the secret to a good life is the more you give the more your good fortunes multiply. I put down this book feeling a great deal of admiration for Paul Newman, he was a most enlightened individual and the world is a better place because he left his mark on it. We read far too much about the men whose greed and dishonesty are destroying our world and it is disheartening to all of us, but here is a story of a man who is the model of what a rich and talented man can create and give to the world. If you read this book you might feel as I do, I will forver miss Paul Newman because the world was just so much better when he was here with us! And thank you Mr. Hotchner for giving us this delightful inside look into his world.Get more detail about Paul and Me: Fifty-three Years of Adventures and Misadventures with My Pal Paul Newman.

Mostly Harmless Econometrics: An Empiricist's Companion Order Now

This is a great book that I really wish had been written when I was first learning econometrics. It is probably best appreciated by someone who has already taken one or two econometrics classes and has had some exposure to applied econometrics research. If you haven't taken econometrics yet you will not really appreciate the 'paradigm shift' that they are trying to explain nor appreciate some of the humor and storytelling. But if you are like myself someone who first learned econometrics more than a decade ago you'll find yourself reading this book page by page with appreciation. I feel that it is helping me to develop a much more mature understanding of the field of applied micro econometrics (helping me to confirm hunches and general notions I already and also new gems of insight). There are many cookbooks that might explain the methods in more depth (e.g. Cameron and Trivedi Microeconometrics) but that's not the purpose of this book. It's purpose is to make you think more about 'research design' which is to say about the questions that you pose, and how you pose them, rather than the methods that you use to try to arrive at answers. For too long econometricians got lost in the details of methods without taking a step back to think about some really fundamental questions first. The book is filled with examples of both good and bad research and you'll be surprised at how bad some past very influential research looks in light of modern day paradigms. It's not that these earlier researchers didn't know enough math, it's that they used the math without clear enough purpose.

This book will make you a better economist and beyond that make you see the world around you slightly differently. You'll end up with a keener eye for all those natural experiments happening all around you. If you are an advanced undergraduate, MA or starting PhD student with any pretensions of becoming engaged in original applied economics research this book should be a "must have" on your bookshelf.Get more detail about Mostly Harmless Econometrics: An Empiricist's Companion.

The Looting of America: How Wall Street's Game of Fantasy Finance Destroyed Our Jobs, Pensions, and Prosperity—and What We Can Do About It Decide Now

The Looting of America, by Les Leopold

The `Introduction' tells how Leopold began to investigate modern economics after the bursting of the "housing bubble". Many Establishment Experts can neither explain the crash or solve it because of their "ideological blinders" (p.ix). Many caused it over the past thirty years (p.x). Leopold asks where "several trillion dollars worth of value" disappeared to (p.xi)? That is how a swindle works: the seller gets the money, the buyer gets the loss. Collateralized Debt Obligations (CDO) were a swindle when money was given for fraudulent loans (p.xii). This was similar to the High Tech Stock swindles in the late 1990s where new stock was sold for a price far in excess of its true value. "Some men rob with a six-gun, others with a fountain pen." Financial products (p.xii) bought with real money are dependent on promises to repay the debt. If people do not have the funds to repay their debt there is a recession.

Chapter 1 tells about the looting of Whitefish Bay. Are people kept ignorant of economics in order to fleece them? "Not financial persons" (p.6) is a confession of incompetence. Bankers and brokers profited (p.8), Whitefish Bay owned nothing but owed everything (p.9). Chapter 2 discusses the link between productivity and income. [Wages are kept down by political oppression.] The devaluation of the dollar in 1971 led to lower wages and higher taxes (p.14). The rich grabbed wealth (p.15) then spent it on investments. Under-paid workers were offered "easy credit" (p.19) but not higher wages. Chapter 3 provides a historical perspective on finance. Government bonds were invented in the 15th century (p.30), corporate shares in the 17th century (p.31). Free financial markets lead to panics and depressions (p.33). The "bubble" is a symptom (pp.34-35). Wall Street controls the White House (p.38). Chapter 4 has the lessons of the Great Depression. Ending the New Deal financial regulations led to out Great Recession (p.49). Those "enormous returns" (p.50) were based on low wages.

Chapter 5 tells how the GAO warned of the dangers of derivatives. Innovative financial services did not protect the nation's financial systems (p.55). Derivatives are not based on real items (p.59). Are they frauds (pp.61-63)? The collapse of LTCM was a warning against derivatives (pp.64-66). Was the housing bubble caused by marginal buyers (Chapter 6)? The "most widespread abuses occurred in the institutions with the least federal control" (p.75). CRA banks made fewer risky loans (p.76). Sub-prime mortgage loans were a small percentage (p.79). Lower interest rates increases the demands for homes (p.80), and the value of houses (p.81). Pages 88-89 tell how the scam worked: sub-prime mortgages were rated as AAA and sold as a CDO! Brokers collected billions by selling "toxic debt".

Chapter 7 explains Credit Default Swaps as insurance for a risky CDO derivative. A CDS and a CDO create a "synthetic CDO" (p.94). This sells risk but not value in securities; they are not backed by real mortgages (p.95). The downturn in the economy revealed the frauds (p.99). Synthetic CDOs allow selling the same debt over and over (p.102). Pages 106 to 108 explain how wealth is created by juggling figures. Chapter 8 explains how the use of CDO created an explosive growth in sub-prime mortgages (p.117). Once the supply exceeded the demand home prices declined. Stagnant wages were part of this (p.119). CDO were fancy swindles that made junk bonds appear to be AAA rated. Regulation by the government is the only way to prevent swindles like Synthetic CDO (p.136). The credit agencies were paid for AAA ratings (p.139). They were frauds (p.144). That surplus capital came from shortchanged workers (p.148).

Chapter 10 explains why finance must be better regulated: our economy depends on it. Can insurance premiums prevent future meltdowns (p.156)? Leopold recommends a small tax on each and every financial transaction. Chapter 11 tells that workers earn less than they did in 1973 (p.165). These policies account for today's inequality (p.166). This can be corrected by a higher income tax standard deduction and a higher minimum wage, and closing the loopholes on untaxed income and capital gains (p.169). High profits and low wages cause a "stock market crash, banks fail, currencies depreciate, unemployment rises" and a recession or depression follows (p.176). The cure is to raise real wages to increase economic activity, raise the minimum wage, and increase union membership. "Money-making" causes social instability (p.184) because of impoverishing others. "Private financial markets" lead to depressions, especially when fraud is used (p.185). Isn't it time to nationalize the banking system (p.186)? This would control them "for the good of us all" (p.189).Get more detail about The Looting of America: How Wall Street's Game of Fantasy Finance Destroyed Our Jobs, Pensions, and Prosperity—and What We Can Do About It.

A Project Guide to UX Design: For user experience designers in the field or in the making Right now

This book is a good introduction to the field of user experience design, which is actually an intersection of several fields, from project management to user research to usability testing. This book is *not* about user interaction design -- a misconception I had when I bought it. Rather, it covers collecting business requirements, user requirements, planning with wireframes, task flows, and creating and testing prototypes. Though many of the techniques can be applied elsewhere, this book focuses on web-based experiences.Get more detail about A Project Guide to UX Design: For user experience designers in the field or in the making.

Discount The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money

Rubbish, that has been discredited by history, if not scores of economists. This bum, contrary to some of the reviewers here, was discredited following the stagnation of the 70's, and puzzingly is being embraced again. The pursuit of something fresh and novel and "progressive" trumped, in Keynes' mind, sound principals and irrefutable historic fact. If you want to see the success of Keynesian economics, just see for yourself the rubble created from nearly all of the 20th century, from the early Progressive era of WWI through today---the Great Depression, the steady inflation since the 30s, the boom-bust cycles whipsawing more wildly with each cycle... And in contrast, observe the Austrian Economics at work during the Depression of 1920-21 when President Harding resisted the siren song of deficit spending and under-consumption theory, and instead cut gvmt spending, opend-up free trade, cut tax rates (especially corporate rates)---and the Depression ended in 18 months. Coolidge continued these great policies, and voila!---we had the roaring twenties, the greatest era of expanded standard of living, not just for the US, but for the entire world. Before the wild hey-day of Keynesian deficit spending and ready money and credit, America practiced essentially the Austrian Economics practices (although the theory wasn't articulated yet) and it begat the greatest era of increased standard of living in history---even greater than Great Britain of the 19th century (following her repeal of the Corn Laws' severe impediments to free trade).
I agree with the one reviewer, that if everyone read Henry HAzlit's "Economics in One Lesson," with its clear, concise writing to the layman, then they would never again feel that the subject of economics was uncomprehensible, dense and mysterious. I would suggest a great political philosophical text as well---Frederic Bastiat's "The Law," which is the political science equivalent of Hazlit's great classic, in its brevity and startling clarity.Get more detail about The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money.

Cheap Emotional Vampires: Dealing With People Who Drain You Dry

I found this book on the shelves of my local library and would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand difficult, manipulative, and obnoxious people. You will learn about the five primary Vampire types, and all of the characteristic personality disorders associated with them. They are: Antisocials, (renegades and bad boys/bad girls) Histrionics, (drama queens, primadonnas, and passive aggressives) Narcissists,(shallow, self centered, ME people) Obsessive Compulsives, (nit picky anal types) and Paranoids. (delusionals and jealous stalkers)

What struck me most about this book is how often we deal with these types of people in our lives; even if you don't quite realize what's wrong, or why they make you miserable. You will recognize these traits in some of your friends, relatives, lovers, bosses, etc. But most importantly, you will also see them in yourself!

One of the more interesting points in this book is that all of us, to varying degrees, have some of these negative traits in ourselves. And the author says if we hold the mirror up to ourselves and can actually see our reflection that's healthy--True vampires can't see themselves in the mirror. Another main point is that these people are insecure and lack emotional maturity.

The case studies of vampire behaviors are very interesting and enlightening, and the author writes in a subtle, humorous, storytelling style. He also gives checklists of traits to watch out for, contingency plans and strategies for dealing with emotional vampires, how to avoid them, or put up with them if you must. A great read, and I plan to buy the book.Get more detail about Emotional Vampires: Dealing With People Who Drain You Dry.

Buy Selling to Big Companies

What I most appreciate about Jill's book is her practical, no-nonsense view on selling to big companies.
Three areas really struck me in her book:

1. Your company's value proposition is only as good as your ability to describe measurable business outcomes. Not only does she stress this point effectively, she SHOWS you a list of solid outcomes to consider.
2. Voicemail scripts are not optional; they are essential. She does not suggest you read them verbatim--she suggests the use of "trigger events." This is a brilliant way to stand out among the decision-maker's sea of voicemails.
3. Simple tools. Jill provides a plethora of planning tools in the appendix. These will raise your professionalism to an entirely new level.

"Selling to Big Companies" is a no-b.s. guide to putting your company's growth plan into action. It will show you how to take a credible, prepared approach to reaching executives in your ideal market. Buy your copy NOW!

Shop For Seizing the White Space: Business Model Innovation for Growth and Renewal

Mark Johnson, chairman of Innosight, wrote Seizing the White Space to help companies understand whether they have the opportunity (or the necessity) to innovate their business model. Johnson defines white space as "the range of potential activities not defined or addressed by the company's current business model." In Johnson's model, white space resides beyond product extensions, lateral growth in the customer base, or incremental product innovation. Instead, he focuses on innovations that really change the way a company does business.

Johnson begins with a framework for analyzing and creating business models. The framework is composed of four boxes: the customer value proposition, the profit model, the processes, and resources of the business.

1) The customer value proposition delineates why the customer values the product.
2) The profit model encompasses all the crucial financial dimensions that determine viability, including the revenue model, cost structure, target margins, and velocity (i.e., cycle times).
3,4) The resources and processes boxes consist of what the business needs (people, technology, information, partnerships, etc.) and how the business delivers the CVP within the bounds of financial viability. Johnson uses this four-box definition of business models throughout the book to analyze different case examples and to illustrate a repeatable process of building new business models.

Next, Johnson presents a three-chapter section on three conditions that call for new business models. The conditions occur when 1) a company wants to transform an existing market, often due to changing competition 2) a company wishes to create new markets, such as in emerging market countries 3) industry or economic discontinuities appear. Johnson refers to these three situations as white space within, white space beyond, and whites pace between, respectively.

Finally, Johnson devotes a three-chapter section on the process of creating and implementing new business models. First, he delves into the process of designing a new business, emphasizing the customer value proposition. Second, he covers the implementation of a new business model and the process of incubation, acceleration, and reintegration of the new model back into the organization (if there is one). Third, Johnson addresses a crucial issue of business model innovation within existing organizations -- the challenge of innovation in the face of a dominant incumbent.

Johnson's overall point is that business models aren't arcane or serendipitous magic -- they can be intentionally developed and implemented as a repeatable process.

Throughout the book, Johnson uses dozens of interwoven case studies of varying lengths to illustrate his points. These examples include well-known management-book favorites (Amazon, iPod/iTunes, Dell, Southwest Airlines) as well as less-known examples (Lockheed-Martin, Better World, Hindustan Lever, Tata Motors, Hilti). His point in using these examples isn't to provide new business histories or reveal previously-untold best practices but to show how a wide range of businesses fit into his framework of the four-box business model and illustrate his process of seizing the white space.

Figures in the book also provide quick brainstorming fodder: 19 business model analogies, 14 levers on the customer value proposition, and 19 common dimensions of interference between incumbent and new business models.

Overall, the book will be most useful for executives thinking about changing their company's business model or expanding in radical new directions The in-depth discussions of business models can also aid entrepreneurs looking to build a business model. Finally, product innovators should consider this book if they think their innovations involve significant changes in customer value proposition, the profit formula, key resource, key processes. These changes, by definition, call for a new business model and the potential that the innovative product may need to be treated differently than the company's previous products.

The Ten-Day MBA 3rd Ed.: A Step-By-Step Guide To Mastering The Skills Taught In America's Top Business Schools This instant

OK, I'm done with it, and it took 10 weeks. I probably shouldn't have used it for bedtime reading...
The writer present practical working knowledge of nine major and a handful minor topics in this concise format, and demystifies a lot of MBA lingo along the way. Definitely a step up from "The Complete Idiot's Guide to MBA Basics", which I read last year. Written in down to earth style, which makes it easily accessible. Ends with "mini courses" on day ten, which is a collection of short topics presented at a higher level. Anywhere from "public speaking" to "business law" to "leadership coach". Valuable content, very well organized, high density.Get more detail about The Ten-Day MBA 3rd Ed.: A Step-By-Step Guide To Mastering The Skills Taught In America's Top Business Schools.

Born on a Blue Day: Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant Best Quality

The book provides rare perspective on the author's particular form of the disease, but it's anti-climatic. If you're looking for a book with a story-line that will suck you in, this isn't the book for you. But if you're looking for someone to give you clarity on what an autistic savant may see and how he may think and process things, it's a lot better than a textbook.Get more detail about Born on a Blue Day: Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave: A Penguin Enriched eBook Classic Buy Now

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is one of the few books that every American should read and is also essential for anyone even remotely interested in American history, African Americans, or slavery's sad story. It is a fine piece of writing in itself and also of immense historical value - a true American classic.

The most obvious aspect is of course autobiographical. American literature has a long, prestigious autobiographical tradition, and this is one of the best entries. Douglass' account of his life is profoundly moving and immensely thought-provoking. He begins with his first memories and carries his story all the way to what was then the present. Needless to say, the inside look at slavery from a slave's perspective is the most valuable part; there are numerous such narratives, but this is surely preeminent. The story is heart-wrenching, vividly and unforgettably detailing humanity's inhumanity; we see what it was like to be a slave in regard to everything from food, clothing, and shelter to labor. Many of the incidents are almost painful to even read; actually living through them - or even being alive when such things happened - is now thankfully unimaginable. Douglass gives several examples of physical cruelty, but the most harrowing stories may well be those of psychological torture and simple denial of basic human feelings, as in the heartless breaking up of families. Such things are inherently moving, and this would be one of the most emotional works ever if it were fiction, but the stunning fact that it is not makes it all the more meaningful. The dread weight of its truth is particularly shocking when we realize that Douglass came from one of the areas where slavery was least harsh. The horrors here related are thankfully long past, but such books will always be immensely valuable as reminders of just how cruel people can be - and have been quite recently. We must never forget, lest they happen again.

Douglass in this way is more representative than individual, and he indeed took it on himself to speak for all slaves. The book was in this sense propagandistic and did its job better than anyone could have expected, laying slavery's evils bare to many who were previously unaware or unable - possibly unwilling - to believe. It was an abolitionist milestone and had a real effect in moving slavery toward its end. Yet Douglass' story is extremely interesting in itself; indeed, in many ways he was the spiritual successor of Benjamin Franklin, founder of the American autobiographical tradition. Franklin practically invented the American dream by showing how hard work and perseverance could raise one from humble beginnings to wealth, fame, and acclaim. Douglass had infinitely worse circumstances yet managed to rise far above them - not only teaching himself to read but becoming a genuine autodidact, not only escaping slavery but becoming a noted abolitionist, orator, writer, black leader, and racial authority with world fame and reverence. Few stories are more inspirational, and the work is thus on top of everything else the best kind of self-help book. Douglass unforgettably shows that it is possible to overcome even the most adverse circumstances and gives a good idea of how to do so.

One must not neglect to mention that, incredible as it is, Douglass is a premier prose stylist. Considering his circumstances, the fact that he was able to write at all is amazing; anyone would make great allowance for poor or even semi-literature writing. In fact, though, Douglass is a top-level writer; this is not only one of the very few autobiographies that is true literature but simply great writing per se. The writing is simple in the best sense; Douglass truly embodied Jonathan Swift's good style definition: "Proper words in proper places." He is admirably clear and concise. That said, he works himself up to a rhapsody when appropriate, reaching near-lyrical heights; the passage where he compares himself to the free is one of the most affecting and best-written I have seen in the hundreds or thousands of books I have read. That Douglass' Narrative has this totally unlooked for virtue in addition to all others is thoroughly impressive.

Simply put, anyone who has not read this should do so as soon as possible; few books are more important or memorable. Douglass is an American giant, and this is his enduring fame's base. No one who reads it can forget it, and that may be the highest praise of all.

As for this edition, it is important to realize that, like other Dover Thrift entries, it is bare bones - only a short headnote besides the text. Anyone wanting extra will have to look elsewhere, which is a good idea for those wanting some historical background or more information on Douglass, including what he deliberately left out. That said, the book stands on its own as few can, and most will be well-served by this inexpensive and readily available version.Get more detail about Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave: A Penguin Enriched eBook Classic.

The Practice of Adaptive Leadership: Tools and Tactics for Changing Your Organization and the World Decide Now

Great sequel to Leadership on the Line, which may be one of the best books I have ever read concerning leadership. Pragmatic, complex yet so is leadership. The two together provide a framework that helps individuals and organizations adapt and thrive in challenging situations. Change requires you to challenge people's familiar reality, or in some sense be disruptive. That can be difficult, dangerous work. And, as you push though major changes, the political and organizational fallout can be deadly....Nonetheless, leaders need to find a way to make it work. The two texts are a necessary addition to any leadership library....and insightful for leaders in those situations.Get more detail about The Practice of Adaptive Leadership: Tools and Tactics for Changing Your Organization and the World.

Lowest Price Financial Intelligence: A Manager's Guide to Knowing What the Numbers Really Mean

The authors do a nice job of explaining most of the basic financial aspects of running a public company. A great basic review. I do like their underlining theme of enabling the employee to be aware of their own company. Many Enron examples are used throughout the book along with other warning signs from recent corporate disasters. I'm not sure the average employee would pick up this book to learn how to read financial statements but if they wanted to, this would be a great resource. Nice workGet more detail about Financial Intelligence: A Manager's Guide to Knowing What the Numbers Really Mean.
