Purchase Stop Acting Rich: ...And Start Living Like A Real Millionaire
I enjoyed the book. It's an easy read. It has some good insights as to what you should do to start saving money. It lays out obvious things people do trying to act rich while really not being rich at all. One problem the book has is that as you read the chapters the premise is exactly the same. Just different situations. But at the end of the day, it basically says, live frugal and save. A car is a car. A watch is a watch. Don't get caught up in the unnecessary and make smart purchases.Get more detail about Stop Acting Rich: ...And Start Living Like A Real Millionaire.

Order The Curse of the Pharaohs (An Amelia Peabody Mystery-Book 2) Library Edition
I was frankly embarrassed to be seen reading a book with such a silly title. But don't worry. The curse isn't real, and the reader knows it from the beginning.
Rumors of a curse make it easier for grave robbers to scare people off in nineteenth century Egypt, where Elizabeth Peters' intrepid Victorian archeologists are at work.
Before reading this book, I'd suggest reading Crocodile on the Sandbank, the first book in the series. Then you'll know how the marriage of archeologist Radcliffe Emerson and adventure traveler Amelia Peabody came about. They are equally opinionated, clever, unconventional and courageous. They bicker constantly - and are mad about each other.
In this book Emerson and Amelia are taking over an excavation launched by Lord Baskerville in the Valley of the Kings. When Lord Baskerville dies suddenly and for no apparent reason, his beautiful widow hires Emerson. Amelia accompanies him.
The reader has several murders to look forward to, and a whole host of well-drawn characters to suspect. But the real appeal of these books is the lively narration by Amelia Peabody Emerson, who is the opposite of the Victorian ideal.
Amelia is in great shape from laboring side by side with workman at the tomb site. When danger threatens her husband, she thinks nothing of running through the night to his rescue, a revolver in one hand and an almost equally lethal parasol in the other.
This is pure escapist reading, but wittily written and authentic as to its archeological details. Elizabeth Peters is an archeologist. I'll eventually read the next book in the series, and deal as best I can with another embarrassing title (The Mummy Case).Get more detail about The Curse of the Pharaohs (An Amelia Peabody Mystery-Book 2) Library Edition.

Shop For Survivor in Death (In Death #20)
This was my first J. D. Robb book. I know, it hardly seems that I could have actively read books in the Noughties and totally missed Ms Robb's offerings-- but I did. (I also admit I have managed to avoid reading any books by her alter ego, Nora Roberts.) But still I like sf and I like police procedurals so I gave this one a try when I found it in a thrift shop.
The book starts with a pretty horrific event, a home invasion and the slaughter of a family. The only person who escapes is the young daughter who had woke up and gone to the kitchen for a snack-- an "orange fizzy" whatever that is. She witnesses the murder of their housekeeper, calls for the police then goes up to her parents' bedroom to hide and wait for the cops.
Given the horrific events and the description of the scene found by the police, this book seems remarkably detached. I don't mind Dallas' professional detachment. It's impossible to deal with the messy bits without professional detachment, it's just that bad things happen and there is no real menace. More time is spent on Dallas' past as an abused child, than the killers.
The book is undemanding, goes down smooth, and Probably pleases her fans. Had I paid full price for it though, I would be feeling a little cheated at this point.
As a side note I was kind of struck by the possibility of product placement since there was a scene involving the search for a Pepsi. Also, the orange fizzy thing was odd because I grew up in the age of Fizzies-- tablets with fruit flavoring that fizzed when dropped in water. Apparently after a long absence, they are back again.

Creating Magic: 10 Common Sense Leadership Strategies from a Life at Disney
I work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This book was read by all the Chiefs from all the divisons in our district in L.A. This proved to be a great leadership tool and was made mandatory to purchase by the Chief's teamleaders.
Aside from all the jokes people make about the government spending money unecesarily, I can tell you that is not true. We are really restricted in our spending to the point where we are not allowed to purchase water for our office. For the district to allow us to purchase these books shows that this book is an incredible leadership too.Get more detail about Creating Magic: 10 Common Sense Leadership Strategies from a Life at Disney.

Total Workday Control Using Microsoft Outlook, 2nd Edition Review
Very useful and practical book. The irony of most of these kinds of books is that if you really need a time management book, you won't actually make the time to read the time management book, much less put the lessons into practice.
Unlike most "get organized" books, this one doesn't require very much time investment (1-2 hours) to start seeing a benefit. You can start by just following the step-by-step instructions to reconfigure Outlook so that the task system works more intuitively than the default settings in Outlook. I've done that, and it's worthwhile.
The "mastery" sections are optional and available when you have time to invest in time management.Get more detail about Total Workday Control Using Microsoft Outlook, 2nd Edition.

Not A Good Day To Die: The Untold Story Of Operation Anaconda Immediately

If you like military books and movies especially those based on true stories, this is a must read. It's an excellent account of the botched up operations in Afghanistan that shows the good and the ugly of U.S. military operational execution. It tells the story of true American military heros who against all odds successed in a mission poorly prepared for by the senior brass in our military but of the awesome guys on the ground and air who once again overcame poor Pentagon leadership. The author obviously did a LOT of research but unfortunately, like some of Clancy's books, goes into WAY too much detail and I often found myself skipping over paragraphs to get to the meat of the story. If not for this, I would have easily given it 5-stars. This books helps those of us who have never served in our military to better understand and appreciate what our fellow American brothers in uniform do and give for our great country.Get more detail about Not A Good Day To Die: The Untold Story Of Operation Anaconda.

Easterly's framework for analysis is what seems most impoverished here. Professor Esther Duflo of MIT (a bit more prestigious and rigorous than NYU) has better questions, better stats and more interesting observations that blow Easterly's intellectual dishonesty out of the water. There are obviously many reasons that certain regions may be impoverished, but to say aid has "failed" is a statement without meaning or scientific basis. As one cannot know what things would be like if there had been no aid, how can one judge or define failure? See Duflo's fascinating TED talk here: [...]

Lowest Price Purity In Death (In Death #15)
Purity in Death by J. D. Robb
The not too distant future is the setting for Lt. Eve Dallas and her adventures. The entire series I have read so far is focused on homicide and the mystery that surrounds each murder. A vigilante group decides to cleanse the lurid streets of NY of what they consider predators. The trouble is they have substantial collateral damage.
Dallas is a firm believer is justice. Roarke, her husband, feels that justice may often be served by those outside of the judicial process. He may be influencing Dallas. She uses his considerable talent and expertise in socially unacceptable skills to help her solve this mystery. I do like the loyalty that Dallas shows to her staff and the resultant loyalty that is returned. The emotional interplay is the key to success in this series.
I recommend the book and the series.

Low Price Googled: The End of the World As We Know It
After buying the audio CD I regret not buying the MP3 or the Audible version instead. The problem is that for some idiotic reason the publisher of the audio CD decided to put 99 tracks on each CD and the track breaks aren't at chapter breaks. So for example Chapter 4 starts on disc 3 & 45 seconds into track 12. This makes it extremely difficult if you want to pick up where you left off or want to go back for any reason. Very lazy audio authoring and not worth the money. Cheap Meltdown: A Free-Market Look at Why the Stock Market Collapsed, the Economy Tanked, and Government Bailouts Will Make Things Worse
Meltdown, written by Thomas Woods Jr., examines the popular topic of what caused the latest recession and describes how government's intervention and political agenda were to blame. This book, however, uses simplistic applications of Austrian School of Economic thought to explain complex processes that involve the irrational economic decision maker, the human being.
The first part of the book does a good job of describing the housing policies that were a weakness in developing a strong economy. The usual culprits of government sponsored enterprises (GSE's) are listed as causes of the recession. It misses, however, international forces and private sector mismanagement in the pursuit of profits that also caused the recession. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the Community Reinvestment Act no doubt contributed to the housing bubble. What is ignored is the 2 trillion dollars of Chinese foreign investment that hand strung any effort to raise interest rates during the making of the housing bubble. Also ignored are the rating agency's poor risk evaluations in the pursuit of profit by turning BBB- ratings into AAA ratings.
Meltdown then describes the problem of moral hazard and the financial assistance the government provided to save the corrupted system. One of the topics that is particularly amusing in light of the recent Goldman Sachs charges is Wood's description of short-selling as being unpatriotic. I thought that short selling is a legitimate investment strategy and still do. In the Goldman Sachs case, I find this to be another example of the private sector justifying better government regulation of financial services. A registry like the DOW would require greater transparency and would have disclosed Goldman Sachs' efforts to design a fund that was destined to fail.
According to this book, current economic growth and recessions are caused by the central bank's action in the economy. In the chapter on "How Government Causes the Boom-Bust Business Cycle", Wood's describes the low interest rate period in this century's first decade as the work of the federal reserve, ignoring any international influences. The federal reserve's objective is to maximize growth while managing inflation. This chapter ignores the fact that there was little inflationary pressure during this period so the fed should not have raised interest rates. Raising interest rates would undermine confidence and could have caused a recession.
The next chapter of the book examines how government made the Great Depression worse instead of mitigating it. I have no argument about the policies of FDR that prolonged the Depression. Fortunately the world has a central banker in the US who is familiar with this subject and has acted on the lessons learnt from this period in history. Bernanke has supported credit markets so consumer confidence can continue at levels that will mitigate the economic damage that unregulated financial markets have created.
Wood's takes the reader into the history of money in his next chapter and discusses government manipulation of money and the negative consequences. He doesn't discuss the positive consequences learnt from history. Part of this discussion examines inflation and the theory of cost-push inflation. The criticism is that if gasoline increases in price then people will have less to spend on other goods and therefore there is offsetting deflation in other goods due to higher prices for necessity goods. There are two problems with this. 1) Petroleum is used in so many other goods that their price would also increase and 2) Workers will demand higher wages to meet higher costs of goods and this will cause prices to increase while fixed income citizens will have their incomes eroded.
In conclusion I think this book is a vehicle for a "point of view" rather than an unbiased explanation of the causes of the recession. If you hold a libertarian view on how society should be organized then you will like this book. If you are looking for a balanced view on what caused the recession, educate yourself on some basic economics or read the Big Short.
Mark.

Buying Darkfever
I found this series after reading several romance/paranormal books and was quite surprised at how quickly i was sucked in! Some question this book even being linked to romance, however I feel it was the possibility (or impossibility) of a romance that was the heart of the story. It's not a book for those of you that like the typical romance novel. It is not the focus of the story, but is an underlying factor. The author builds strong characters that you become attached to and a world that is ever changing and interesting. You wont be able to put the book down. Purchase Visions in Death (In Death #19)
This is one of a character book series, featuring an in the future homicide detective hardened by abuse as a child and her resolution of that problem who meets an Irish street/gangster turned legitimate and extremely wealthy [but retaining all his former skills and associations]. He romances her, breaks through her defenses, and together they form a love couple, crime-stopping team amongst the likes of The Thin Man duo, McMillan & Wife, "Bones" and Booth, and Castle and Beckett. Throughout the series, J.D. Robb [companion pen name of Nora Roberts] briefly revisits the nightmare past of Cpt. Eve Dallas soothed with a Roarke who is there to hold and comfort her; then her comfort for him when he finds family out of his own nightmares. The supporting characters are delightfully developed and, seemingly unexpectantly, Dallas, with Roarke's support, also finds a family.
My recommendation concerning this J.D. Robb [Nora Roberts] ".... in Death" book series is not to start here with this book, but to visit Ms. Roberts website, [...], click on the J.D. Robb book list, and start reading the series in chronological order. This is not necessary at all, but I think it is preferable. Ms. Robb [Roberts] has a gift of being able to not only compose characters with depth and imprinted with personalities, strength and foibles that intrigue and envelop a reader which are consistent throughout the series, but also to create sound, convincing story plots and feasible police technique [and squad interworking] as well.
Finally, Ms. Robb's [Roberts'] abilities allow the reader to sink into the drama, successfully creates the illusion for a reader of having a compatibility with the actors and action, and the truest test of this writer's skill and the series' success... You hate to finish the book and immediately look for the publication of the next book.

Where To Buy Still Life (An Inspector Armand Gamache - Three Pines Mystery #1)
I am a little sad that I can't give Still Life more than 2 stars. It was recommended to me and it's not a pleasant task to trash someone's suggestion, but what can I do, this book was just a barely OK read for me.
Still Life is a traditional ("cozy") mystery set in a Canadian village Three Pines. One Sunday morning a body of 76-year old Jane Neal - a long-time resident of the village - is found. At first, it appears that Jane was killed in a hunting accident, but later we find out that quite a few seemingly ordinary and upstanding villagers have some secrets to hide and maybe reasons to murder the old lady.
On a positive side, I enjoyed learning a little about Quebec. I personally never knew that there was a tension between Quebec and the rest of Canada and also a lot of friction between francophones and anglophones. Archery/hunting details were interesting as well.
As for the rest, the book didn't live up to my expectations. Poor characterization simply killed the story for me. The characters were drawn in a strange way and their back stories introduced awkwardly. I couldn't understand their motivations and actions. Too often they acted immaturely (Yvette Nichol) or weirdly hysterical (Carol Marrow, Yolanda). Dialog was very stilted at times too, often I had no idea what people were talking about and why they found certain things funny.
I suppose I should have cut Louise Penny some slack, it was her first novel after all. But the book was rather poorly written even for the first effort. I am surprised Still Life managed to receive so much critical recognition and mainly positive Goodreads ratings. Did the mystery standards go down since Agatha Christie's death? I guess the success of this book is the biggest mystery to me...Get more detail about Still Life (An Inspector Armand Gamache - Three Pines Mystery #1).

The Economic Consequences of the Peace Get it now!
This "General Books" edition was apparently made by using optical character recognition to typeset from an existing copy of the original book. The result is unreadable because the technique produced gibberish where there were smudges, underlining, etc. in the original copy. I have re-ordered (but not yet received) a more expensive copy of the book which appears to have been digitized and reset--and free of errors. Google also has a downloadable (pdf) version made by digitizing a copy of the book from a university library. The Return of the Great Depression Buy Now
Vox Day is not buying the current prognostications on the part of many that the United States has hit bottom economically and that we are in a nascent recovery. In "The Return of the Great Depression", he forecasts that, unfortunately, we are in for a contraction somewhat worse than the one our forebears endured eighty years ago.
Day tells the story of how we arrived at our present pass, examining the subprime mortgage crisis and the role of artificially low interest rates and relaxed lending standards in that crisis. He also casts doubt on some of the economic statistics the government releases and offers his reasons for doubting them.
The book delivers a great primer on the differences between Keynesianism, the Chicago School (monetarism), and the Austrian School, and describes how each school views the role of the money/credit supply in an economy.
One of the fundamental tenets of Austrian economics is the view that the severity of an economic contraction is correlated to the volume of malinvestments in the economy prior to the crash. President Obama responded to the recent downturn by injecting massive amounts of useless spending into the economy. He appears to desire to become the American version of Pierre Elliott Trudeau--introduce massive amounts of new spending and government programs and hope that taxes, including both income taxes and a GST or VAT, are eventually raised to pay for them. This massive spending of 2009 and 2010 (on top of Bush's more modest stimulus in 2008) will lead to much higher levels of malinvestment in an economy that already had very high levels of malinvestment in 2008 due to the subprime mortgage crisis.
This leads Day to his conclusion that we are headed for a second Great Depression. He outlines six different scenarios, from very optimistic to very pessimistic, of where the economy is headed and ranks the likelihood of each scenario. He of course thinks that a depression is most likely and explains his reasons for predicting deflation instead of predicting inflation as some Austrian economists are. Day even predicts where the Dow Jones Industrial Average will bottom out in 2012 or 2013.
I am sympathetic to many aspects of Austrian economics, but I fervently hope that Vox Day's prediction is wrong. However, if many of today's Keynesians and monetarists are incorrect about their predictions of recovery, we cannot say that we were not warned that Great Depression II was at the door.Get more detail about The Return of the Great Depression.

Lowest Price Face the Fire (Three Sisters Island Trilogy)
Now, I have not read the other two in the series, so I will not comment on the supernatural plot (which I actually found to be kind of stupid).
I could not connect to Mia. She was just too cold, and so were Nell and Ripley, to Sam. Yes, he left her. But the fact that he wanted to fix what he did is mature. And the way she talked to her friend's husband Mac really pissed me off. He also seemed to be affected by it, like when he'd blush, which made Mia seem like such a flirt, and not very intelligent. I really liked Sam's character, and felt that everybody was just too mean to him.
Not having read the other two, that's all I can really say. Though I don't think I will go out of my way to, judging by how I felt about this excuse for a finale.Get more detail about Face the Fire (Three Sisters Island Trilogy).

Discount How Remarkable Women Lead: The Breakthrough Model for Work and Life
The more I got into this book, the better it got. Toward the end I didn't want to put it down. I found myself reaching for my highlighter, a sure sign that there was good information there that I don't want to lose.
Some chapters in this book didn't really reach out and grab me, because they better apply to women starting out in their careers. I found a chapter that not only reached out and grabbed me, but it shouted at me! I suspect that most women will find something worthwhile in this book, even if not every chapter applies. I found a technique that I hope will help me avoid one of my problematic habits.
In addition to my problem section, which I will not share here,
There are stories and excellent quotes throughout the book from leaders, women and men, to illustrate the points the author is making.
Adapting To The New Realities is a section I would like to recommend along with the Stepping up to Lead. "You can manage a lot of people, but to lead you have to inspire, not intimidate. Have passion and compassion." Then I was delighted with the section on "Energy in Your Toolkit" where an example was given of treating your energy as an asset that you invest and grow. The information on how to "Minimize the Drains" on your energy is right on target. Having boundaries. What an interesting idea! OUCH! The comment also got me about a Pavlovian reaction to your phone ringing and fragmenting your time through ongoing e-mailing, texting, and phonecalls causing you to lose concentration and lose control of your schedule. I DO allow others to highjack my time on things that may be far less important. Urgent is not important. Kicking the "always-On" habit. Can you do that? It sounds wonderful to me.
I'm going to have to spend more time on that chapter.
Then I'm going to devote a little more time to the chapter on "Recovery Time" I think.
Now where is that highlighter.

Buying What Would Google Do?
"What Would Google Do?" is a very compelling read. Although internet technology is moving ahead at such a breath-taking pace, and updates are literally by the hour, Jeff Jarvis brings the cogent message home: with anything, for your sake and society's, ask yourself "what would Google do?" Jarvis could revise this edition almost weekly to keep us all up to date and aware of the fast-paced changes afoot in marketing, news, and commerce today. And, that's precisely his message, Jarvis' blog does that (electronically)!
Google has been innovative not only in replacing physical libraries in our quest for information, but exemplary in providing such invaluable services based on the brilliant platform of "free." Google has become extraordinarily prosperous via their advertising vehicle and yet it didn't start that way. Jarvis also includes Craigslist, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon.com, he helps explain what is happening in our society with regards to immediacy and community. Sharing serves and sells.
Great read. Get it. Embrace it. It's where we're all going.Get more detail about What Would Google Do?.

Purchase The Hiding Place
"The Hiding Place," by Corie Ten Boom, is the true account of a courageous family who risked their very lives hiding Jews and others in need during the Nazi occupation. Corie was a spinster who, along with her sister, Betsy, found herself swept up in a struggle against evil as she worked with many other faithful individuals to preserve lives. Not only does this true story recount daring undercover operations and secret rooms, it also illustrates how even a pot of coffee, cream puffs, and a kind prayer can make a difference. Even if sacrifices must be made, God uses Satan's schemes against him, and courageous warriors who rely upon Christ's strength can vanquish the foe.
Focus On the Family has dramatized this compelling story in a vibrant and unforgettable fashion. All the actors/actresses do exceptional jobs, particularly the actor portraying Corie's wise, devout father. I'd definitely recommend this magnificent drama to anyone who loves listening to true accounts of God's sovereignty and divine protection: "For I am convinced that neither heights nor depths, neither angels or demons, ... nor anything can separate us from the love of Christ" (Romans 8), "The Lord is my fortress and my Rock, a very present help in times of trouble" (Psalms 46).
Please give this unforgettable drama a chance. God bless you.Get more detail about The Hiding Place.

Order The Myth of the Rational Market: A History of Risk, Reward, and Delusion on Wall Street
The first 95% of this book represents one of the best summaries of leading intellectual thought concerning the efficiency (or rationality) of financial markets. My guess is that if you have an interest in the concept of market efficiency, you will enjoy this well-researched summary. Author Justin Fox covers a lot of ground and does a good job at it. However, it's my opinion that for some lay readers, this isn't going to seem like a page-turner.
The list of economists, statisticians, investors, etc. covered in this book reads like a who's who of the important figures in the history of investment theory. Importantly, the reader gets to see the intellectual connections (and in some cases the interpersonal connections) between the likes of Louis Bachelier, Henri Poincare, Irving Fisher, Roger Babson, John Maynard Keynes, John Burr Williams, Alfred Cowles, Paul Samuelson, Harry Markowitz, Franco Modiglianni, Merton Miller, Gene Fama, Michael Jensen, Richard Thaler, Robert Schiller, Ed Thorpe and others well known in the field of financial market theory.
While "modern" portfolio theory (MPT), which dates back to the 1950s and 60s, became increasingly accepted through perhaps the late 1970s (thanks in good part to the pioneering efforts of some of the economists mentioned above), in more recent times behavioral finance--which looks more at what people actually do, as opposed to what a rational person would do--has held increasing sway. Before the efforts of the behavioral scientists, MPT seemed very much to be accepted science. However, markets can become rational only through sufficient interactions of rational (even though imperfect) participants. Real world experiences like a 22% drop in stock prices in just one day (in October 1987) without major economic news, combined with a relatively quick bounce back within a year--or the NASDAQ index soaring above 5,000 in 2000 with companies that amounted to little more than a business plan acquiring large market capitalizations--suggest somewhat of a lack of rationality. This book does a good job covering topics like these and the economists who addressed them, and that's the 95% of the book I truly enjoyed.
This brings me to the end of the book. The book's title suggests a debunking of the myth of a rational market; but despite covering evidence of market irrationality (which has been discussed and successfully exploited by the likes of Warren Buffett for years), Justin Fox doesn't finish the job. He doesn't go in for the kill. Rather, he seems to let modern portfolio theory off with what feels like a draw. Although I would heartily recommend this book for its rich history of the concept of rational markets, in the end I was disappointed.

Where To Buy The Oz Principle: Getting Results Through Individual and Organizational Accountability
I am a oonsultant with small businesses and I am constantly being called on to help with getting the team on board. Communication is frequently a problem. The four part test, see it, own it, solve it and then do it, has become a stable part of my vocabulary. The See It part is so crucial. We think we have asked or stated the problem clearly, until we follow up and find that we are missing key components. That part alone has been worth the price of the book. The three books in the series have been three of the best books I have read on this topic.Get more detail about The Oz Principle: Getting Results Through Individual and Organizational Accountability.

Shop For Natural Capitalism: Creating the Next Industrial Revolution
Hawken and Lovins do an excellent job of summarizing (circa 1996, but still quite applicable), how focusing on whole systems, utilizing the benefits of natural processes, and removing waste can promote economic development while IMPROVING the natural environment. Instead of the typical extractive, exploitative processes used by industry, companies can learn from nature, leverage the 4 billion year investment in evolution, and make great strides towards improvements.
I particularly enjoyed the sections on eliminating Muda, or waste, from our processes - as these are a primary place where humankind throws away time, money, and valuable resources. There are, of course, a lot of other books out there on waste and lean thinking, so this is a good starting point.
In all, Hawken and Lovins give a great overview of many of the aspects of green industry, without sounding preachy, overly liberal, or anti-capitalism. In their world, capitalism benefits greatly from considering the impact it has on the earth and the systems therein - and that's the kind of world I want to live in.Get more detail about Natural Capitalism: Creating the Next Industrial Revolution.
