This is one of a character book series, featuring an in the future homicide detective hardened by abuse as a child and her resolution of that problem who meets an Irish street/gangster turned legitimate and extremely wealthy [but retaining all his former skills and associations]. He romances her, breaks through her defenses, and together they form a love couple, crime-stopping team amongst the likes of The Thin Man duo, McMillan & Wife, "Bones" and Booth, and Castle and Beckett. Throughout the series, J.D. Robb [companion pen name of Nora Roberts] briefly revisits the nightmare past of Cpt. Eve Dallas soothed with a Roarke who is there to hold and comfort her; then her comfort for him when he finds family out of his own nightmares. The supporting characters are delightfully developed and, seemingly unexpectantly, Dallas, with Roarke's support, also finds a family.
My recommendation concerning this J.D. Robb [Nora Roberts] ".... in Death" book series is not to start here with this book, but to visit Ms. Roberts website, [...], click on the J.D. Robb book list, and start reading the series in chronological order. This is not necessary at all, but I think it is preferable. Ms. Robb [Roberts] has a gift of being able to not only compose characters with depth and imprinted with personalities, strength and foibles that intrigue and envelop a reader which are consistent throughout the series, but also to create sound, convincing story plots and feasible police technique [and squad interworking] as well.
Finally, Ms. Robb's [Roberts'] abilities allow the reader to sink into the drama, successfully creates the illusion for a reader of having a compatibility with the actors and action, and the truest test of this writer's skill and the series' success... You hate to finish the book and immediately look for the publication of the next book.
